The date of Patriot Day

Patriot Day is always September 11, so only the weekday changes. It was established by a joint resolution of Congress signed by President George W. Bush in December 2001, and each year the President issues a proclamation. Since 2009 the day has also been the National Day of Service and Remembrance, when Americans are encouraged to volunteer in their communities. In 2028 Patriot Day is on Monday, September 11, 2028.

What happened on September 11, 2001

On the morning of September 11, 2001, 19 al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four passenger planes. Two were flown into the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, which collapsed within two hours, and a third struck the Pentagon outside Washington, D.C. The fourth, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers and crew fought back against the hijackers. A total of 2,977 people were killed, including more than 400 firefighters, police officers and other first responders.

How the day is observed

The law asks that flags be flown at half-staff on all government buildings, homes and businesses, and Americans are invited to observe a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. Eastern Time, when the first plane struck the North Tower. At the National September 11 Memorial in New York, family members read aloud the names of the victims, with pauses at the moments of each attack and collapse. Ceremonies are also held at the Pentagon and at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Pennsylvania.

Memorials

The National September 11 Memorial opened at Ground Zero in 2011, on the tenth anniversary of the attacks, with two reflecting pools set in the footprints of the Twin Towers and the names of the victims inscribed in bronze. The museum beneath it opened in 2014. The Pentagon Memorial opened in 2008, and the Flight 93 National Memorial near Shanksville was dedicated in 2011. On the evening of each anniversary the Tribute in Light sends two beams of light into the sky above Lower Manhattan.

Is it a day off?

Patriot Day is not a federal holiday. Government offices, schools, banks and the stock exchanges are open, although many schools and workplaces hold a moment of silence. Many people take part in service projects, blood drives, memorial runs and events that honor first responders and the military.
