Day Events
Patriot Day, observed on September 11, honors the 2,977 people killed in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, at the World Trade Center in New York, at the Pentagon and aboard United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Flags fly at half-staff, and Americans observe a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. Eastern Time, when the first plane struck the North Tower. Since 2009 the day has also been the National Day of Service and Remembrance, when many people volunteer in their communities. Patriot Day is not a federal holiday.
Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, falls on 1 and 2 Tishrei in the Hebrew calendar and begins at sundown on the evening before. It opens the High Holy Days and the Ten Days of Repentance, which end with Yom Kippur. In synagogue the shofar, a ram's horn, is sounded as a call to reflection and renewal. At home families eat apples dipped in honey and a round challah for a sweet new year, and many perform Tashlich, casting bread crumbs into flowing water as a symbol of casting away sins. The traditional greeting is "Shanah tovah", a good year.
