The date of Flag Day

Flag Day is always June 14, so only the weekday changes. The President issues a proclamation each year, and the week that includes June 14 is National Flag Week, when Americans are asked to display the flag. June 14 is also the birthday of the U.S. Army, founded in 1775. In 2028 Flag Day is on Wednesday, June 14, 2028.

The Flag Resolution of 1777

On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress resolved "that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation." The resolution did not say how the stars should be arranged, so early flags varied. The story that Betsy Ross sewed the first flag is popular, but historians have not found evidence to confirm it.

How Flag Day became official

Bernard J. Cigrand, a schoolteacher in Waubeka, Wisconsin, is credited with holding one of the first Flag Day observances with his students in 1885, and he campaigned for a national day for decades. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed June 14 as Flag Day in 1916, and in 1949 Congress made National Flag Day permanent by law, signed by President Harry Truman. Pennsylvania is the only state that observes it as a state holiday.

Stars and stripes

The flag has kept its 13 stripes for the original colonies since 1818, while a star is added for each new state on the Fourth of July after the state joins the Union. The current 50-star flag was first flown on July 4, 1960, after Hawaii became a state, and it has been in use longer than any earlier version. It was designed by Robert G. Heft, then a high school student in Ohio, as a class project.

How to observe Flag Day

Many homes, businesses and public buildings fly the flag, and towns hold parades and ceremonies. Troy, New York, and Quincy, Massachusetts, are known for some of the largest Flag Day parades. The U.S. Flag Code recommends displaying the flag from sunrise to sunset, lighting it if it flies at night, and retiring worn flags in a dignified way, often by burning at a ceremony held by veterans organizations or scout troops. Flag Day is not a federal holiday, and offices, banks and schools are open.
