Why November 11
The armistice that ended fighting in World War I took effect at 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918, the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the first Armistice Day on November 11, 1919, and Congress made it a legal holiday in 1938. On June 1, 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the law that changed the name to Veterans Day, so it would honor veterans of all wars.
The years Veterans Day was on a Monday
The 1968 Uniform Monday Holiday Act moved Veterans Day to the fourth Monday of October starting in 1971. The change caused confusion, and many states kept November 11. Congress returned the holiday to November 11 in a 1975 law that took effect in 1978, so the date is fixed again.
Veterans Day, Memorial Day and Armed Forces Day
Veterans Day honors all who have served, living or dead, and is especially a day to thank living veterans. Memorial Day remembers those who died in service. Armed Forces Day, on the third Saturday of May, honors people currently serving. The Department of Veterans Affairs writes the name without an apostrophe because the day honors veterans and does not belong to them.
Arlington and the Unknown Soldier
The national Veterans Day ceremony is held at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia at 11 a.m., with a wreath laid at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The tomb holds an unidentified American killed in World War I, who was buried there on November 11, 1921, the third anniversary of the armistice. In the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and other Commonwealth countries the same date is Remembrance Day, and red poppies are worn.
Observed day and what is open
When November 11 falls on a weekend, 5 U.S.C. § 6103(b) gives most federal employees the nearest weekday off. The next such year is 2028: Veterans' Day is on a Saturday and the federal holiday is observed on Friday, November 10, 2028.
Federal government offices, federal courts, the Federal Reserve Banks and the U.S. Postal Service (no regular mail delivery) are closed. The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq stay open. Banks, schools and state offices vary, and many restaurants and stores offer special deals for veterans.
