The date of Kamehameha Day
Kamehameha Day is fixed on June 11, so only the weekday changes. King Kamehameha V created the holiday in 1871 to honor his grandfather, and the first celebration was held in 1872. Under Hawaii law, when a state holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is the state holiday. In 2028 the holiday is on Sunday, June 11, 2028.
Who was Kamehameha I?
Kamehameha I, also called Kamehameha the Great, united the Hawaiian Islands under one kingdom by 1810 and ruled until his death in 1819. The kingdom he founded lasted until the overthrow of the monarchy in 1893. His statue stands in front of Aliʻiolani Hale in downtown Honolulu, and a statue also stands in Kapaau on the island of Hawaiʻi.
The statues of Kamehameha
The best-known statue of Kamehameha I was designed by the American sculptor Thomas Ridgeway Gould and cast in Paris. The first casting was lost at sea off the Falkland Islands in 1880, on the way to Hawaii. A second casting was unveiled in Honolulu in 1883 during the coronation of King Kalakaua, and the first statue, which was later recovered, stands in Kapaau. A copy made from molds of the Honolulu statue was added to the National Statuary Hall Collection in the U.S. Capitol in 1969.
Other state holidays in Hawaii
Kamehameha Day is one of several holidays that are specific to Hawaii. Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole Day is observed on March 26, the birthday of the prince who served as Hawaii's delegate to Congress, and Statehood Day is held on the third Friday of August to mark the admission of Hawaii to the Union in 1959. Like Kamehameha Day, both are state holidays and not federal holidays.
Celebrations and what is open
Each year the statue in Honolulu is draped with long flower leis in a ceremony, and a parade with pāʻū riders on horseback, floats and bands follows through the city. State offices and public schools in Hawaii are closed. Federal offices, banks and the stock exchanges are open.
