How the date of Father's Day is set
Father's Day is the third Sunday in June, so the date moves between June 15 and June 21 and is always a Sunday. In some years it falls on June 19, the same date as Juneteenth. In 2028 Father's Day is on Sunday, June 18, 2028.
How Father's Day started
Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, proposed a day for fathers to honor her father, William Smart, a Civil War veteran who raised six children alone. The first Spokane celebration was held on June 19, 1910. Presidents Wilson and Coolidge supported the idea, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed a proclamation in 1966 that named the third Sunday of June, and President Richard Nixon signed the law that made it a permanent national observance in 1972.
How Father's Day became official
Father's Day took far longer than Mother's Day to win official recognition. Congress passed a joint resolution for Mother's Day in 1914, but a national Father's Day was proposed several times and did not become permanent until 1972, 58 years later. Early supporters worried that the day would become a commercial copy of Mother's Day, and some people made fun of the idea. Cities such as Spokane kept holding celebrations in the meantime, and retailers began to promote the day in the 1920s.
How the day is celebrated
Father's Day is celebrated with cards, phone calls, meals out and outdoor activities such as barbecues and fishing trips. The date is close to the summer solstice, which falls on June 20 or 21 in most years, and to the end of the school year in many states. Stepfathers, grandfathers, uncles and other father figures are often included in the celebration.
Father's Day around the world
Many countries share the U.S. date: Canada, the United Kingdom, France and India all celebrate on the third Sunday of June. Others choose a different day. Germany marks Vatertag on Ascension Day, a Thursday in May or June. Spain, Portugal and Italy honor fathers on March 19, the feast of Saint Joseph. Thailand celebrates on December 5, the birthday of the late King Bhumibol, and Australia and New Zealand mark Father's Day on the first Sunday of September.
Is it a day off?
Father's Day is not a federal or state holiday. It always falls on a Sunday, so most offices are closed anyway, and stores and restaurants keep their usual weekend hours.
