How the date of Good Friday is set
Good Friday is the Friday before Easter, so it moves with Easter between March 20 and April 23. It commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus and is the center of Holy Week, which begins on Palm Sunday. Easter 2027 is on Sunday, March 28, 2027. In 2028 Good Friday is on Friday, April 14, 2028.
Is Good Friday a holiday in the United States?
It is not a federal holiday, and federal offices, the Federal Reserve Banks and the Postal Service are open. A few states, such as Connecticut, Hawaii, North Carolina and Tennessee, treat it as a state holiday or give state employees the day off. Many schools close for Good Friday or for a spring break around it, and many churches hold services.
Markets closed, government open
The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq are closed on Good Friday every year, even though it is not a federal holiday. Because the federal government is open, the Bureau of Labor Statistics has sometimes released its monthly jobs report on Good Friday, a day when stock markets cannot react to it.
Holy Week
Good Friday belongs to Holy Week, the last week of Lent. The week begins on Palm Sunday, which recalls the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. It continues with Maundy Thursday, which remembers the Last Supper, and with Good Friday, which marks the crucifixion and death of Jesus. Holy Saturday is the day before Easter Sunday.
How Good Friday is observed
Many churches hold services in the afternoon or evening, often around noon to 3:00 p.m., the hours that the Gospels give for the crucifixion. Typical customs include the Stations of the Cross, readings of the Passion narrative and veneration of the cross. The Catholic liturgy on this day is not a Mass. Catholics aged 14 and older abstain from meat on Good Friday, and adults aged 18 to 59 are asked to fast. Some churches hold Tenebrae, an evening service in which candles are put out one by one.
Good Friday around the world
In the United States it is a working day for most people, but in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany and many other countries Good Friday is a public holiday. Eastern Orthodox churches observe Great Friday on the Friday before Orthodox Easter, which is often a different date from Western Good Friday.
