How the date of Easter is set

Western churches celebrate Easter on the first Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon on or after March 21, which is the fixed date the church uses for the spring equinox. The ecclesiastical full moon comes from tables and can differ by a day or two from the astronomical full moon. As a result, Easter can fall anywhere between March 22 and April 25. The earliest date, March 22, last happened in 1818 and will next occur in 2285. The latest, April 25, happened in 1943 and will next occur in 2038.

In 2028 Easter is on Sunday, April 16, 2028.

Why Orthodox Easter is often on a different date

Eastern Orthodox churches use the same rule but calculate it with the Julian calendar, which is currently 13 days behind the Gregorian calendar. Orthodox Easter therefore falls on the same day as Western Easter in some years and up to five weeks later in others. This calendar lists Orthodox Easter separately.

Easter in the United States

German immigrants brought the Easter hare, the "Osterhase", to Pennsylvania in the 1700s. The White House Easter Egg Roll started in 1878 under President Rutherford B. Hayes, after Congress barred children from rolling eggs on the Capitol grounds. Easter parades, sunrise services and egg hunts are held across the country.

Easter customs

Eggs are an old symbol of new life, and decorating and hiding them for children is the best-known Easter custom, along with baskets, chocolate bunnies and jelly beans. Churches are filled with Easter lilies, and Easter Sunday is one of the best-attended days of the church year. The Easter season lasts 50 days after Easter Sunday, until Pentecost.

Easter services

Many churches hold an Easter vigil on the night of Holy Saturday, and sunrise services outdoors on Sunday morning are a long-standing American custom, held in parks and on beaches. Families often gather for a meal after the service, and ham and lamb are common dishes on the table.

Is Easter a day off?

Easter is not a federal holiday, and since it falls on a Sunday there is no weekday off. Easter Monday is not a holiday in the United States. Good Friday (Friday, March 26, 2027) is not a federal holiday either, although the stock exchanges are closed that day.
