The date of World Mental Health Day
World Mental Health Day is fixed on October 10, so only the weekday changes. It was first held in 1992 on the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health, and the World Health Organization supports it. In 2028 the day is on Tuesday, October 10, 2028.
What the day is for
The day aims to reduce stigma and to promote access to mental health care. Each year has a theme, and employers, schools, health organizations and local governments hold events. It is an awareness day, so offices, banks and schools are open.
Mental health in the United States
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, about one in five U.S. adults lives with a mental illness in a given year, and many of them do not receive treatment. Common conditions include anxiety disorders, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and bipolar disorder. Mental health problems affect people of every age, and symptoms often begin in adolescence or early adulthood. Effective treatments exist, including therapy and medication, and talking with a doctor, counselor or other health professional is a good first step.
How the day is marked
Employers often use the day to remind staff about wellness benefits and employee assistance programs, schools hold awareness lessons, and health groups publish guides and host events online and in person. Mental Illness Awareness Week, which NAMI promotes, is held in the first full week of October, so World Mental Health Day always falls close to it. In the United States, May is Mental Health Awareness Month.
Where to get help in the United States
