The date of World Environment Day

World Environment Day is fixed on June 5, so only the weekday changes. The UN General Assembly established it in 1972, on the day the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment opened, and it was first observed in 1974 with the theme "Only One Earth". In 2028 the day is on Monday, June 5, 2028.

How the day works

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) leads the day, and a different host country is chosen each year to hold the main celebration. Each year has a theme, such as air pollution, biodiversity or plastic pollution, and governments, schools and companies hold clean-ups, tree plantings and campaigns.

World Environment Day and Earth Day

In the United States the environment is better known through Earth Day on April 22. The two are different observances: Earth Day began in the United States in 1970, and World Environment Day is a UN day. Neither is a federal holiday, and offices and schools are open on both.

Hosts and themes

Each year a different country hosts the main celebration, and the United Nations Environment Programme, which is headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, sets the theme. India hosted the 2018 day, which was about beating plastic pollution, China hosted in 2019 with a focus on air pollution, and Pakistan hosted in 2021, when the United Nations launched its Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. In 2022 Sweden hosted the day under the slogan "Only One Earth", the same theme as the first day in 1974, to mark 50 years since the Stockholm Conference.

What people do on the day

Typical activities include clean-ups of beaches, rivers and parks, tree plantings, school lessons, and campaigns by companies and city governments. In the United States the Environmental Protection Agency and many local governments publish tips on recycling, cutting waste and saving energy. You do not need an official event to take part: using less single-use plastic, repairing things instead of replacing them and walking or biking short trips are common ways to mark the day.
