How the date of Cyber Monday is set

Cyber Monday is the Monday after Thanksgiving, which is the fourth Thursday of November. That puts it between November 26 and December 2. In 2026 Thanksgiving is on Thursday, November 26, 2026 and Black Friday on Friday, November 27, 2026, so the long shopping weekend ends with Cyber Monday four days after the holiday. In 2027 Cyber Monday is on Monday, November 29, 2027.

Where the name comes from

The term was coined in 2005 by Shop.org, the online division of the National Retail Federation, in a press release about the jump in online sales on the Monday after Thanksgiving. At the time many people did not have fast internet at home and shopped online from work when they returned after the holiday weekend. The name stuck, and retailers began planning their biggest online promotions for that day.

The biggest online shopping day

Cyber Monday has become the largest day for online sales in the United States. According to Adobe Analytics, American shoppers spent about $13.3 billion online on Cyber Monday 2024, more than on any other day of the year, and a growing share of purchases is now made on phones. Many stores stretch the sales into a "Cyber Week" or start them before Thanksgiving, so the deals on Monday itself are often extensions of Black Friday offers.

Shopping safely online

Scammers take advantage of the rush of holiday orders. Buy from websites you know, type the address yourself instead of following links in emails or text messages, and be careful with deals that look too good to be true. Paying with a credit card gives more protection than a debit card or a wire transfer. Check each store's return policy and delivery dates, especially for gifts that must arrive before Christmas.

Is it a day off?

Cyber Monday is a regular workday. Federal and state offices, banks, schools and the stock exchanges are open with normal hours. The next day, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, is Giving Tuesday, a day for donating to charities that began in 2012. In 2026 it is on Tuesday, December 1, 2026.
