October 27th, 2026

World Day for Audiovisual Heritage is observed on October 27 to raise awareness of the importance of preserving films, radio and television recordings, and other audiovisual records. UNESCO established the day in 2005, choosing the date to mark the anniversary of the 1980 UNESCO Recommendation for the Safeguarding and Preservation of Moving Images. Many of these materials are fragile and at risk of being lost through decay, obsolete formats, and neglect. Archives, libraries, and cultural institutions celebrate the day with screenings, exhibitions, and restoration projects that keep this shared memory accessible for future generations.
