World Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Day is observed on October 25 to raise awareness of two related conditions that affect the brain and spinal cord. Spina bifida is a birth defect in which the spine and spinal cord do not close completely during early pregnancy, while hydrocephalus is a buildup of fluid in the brain that can cause pressure and is often treated with a surgically placed shunt. The two conditions frequently occur together. The day is promoted by the International Federation for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus and its member organizations around the world. It highlights the need for early diagnosis, access to medical care, and inclusion in school, work, and community life for people living with these conditions. It also reminds women who could become pregnant that getting enough folic acid before and during early pregnancy can lower the risk of spina bifida.
