The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction is observed to promote a global culture of risk-awareness and disaster reduction. This day highlights the importance of reining in the risks that people face and reducing their exposure to disasters. Events on this day often include community drills, workshops, and conferences focusing on strategies for disaster risk reduction, resilience building, and raising awareness about effective actions, policies, and practices to reduce risks and disasters. The day serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to prevent and reduce exposure to disasters, mitigate their impact, and improve our readiness for adverse events. It's a call to action to protect people, communities, and countries by planning for disasters, reducing vulnerability, and investing in resilient futures.

World Thrombosis Day is observed on October 13 to raise awareness of thrombosis, the formation of blood clots in veins or arteries that can block blood flow. Clots in the deep veins of the legs (deep vein thrombosis) can travel to the lungs and cause a life-threatening pulmonary embolism, while clots in arteries are a common cause of heart attacks and strokes. Launched in 2014 by the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH), the day falls on the birthday of Rudolf Virchow, the 19th-century German physician who first described how clots form and travel. Campaigns focus on knowing the warning signs, such as unexplained leg swelling, pain, or sudden shortness of breath, and on understanding risk factors including surgery, hospital stays, long periods of immobility, cancer, pregnancy, and certain medications. Many clots are preventable, so the day encourages people to talk with a doctor about their personal risk and to seek care quickly if symptoms appear.
