Cinco de Mayo, the fifth of May, commemorates the victory of the Mexican army over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. It is often confused with Mexican Independence Day, which is September 16. In Mexico the day is observed mainly in the state of Puebla, but in the United States it has grown into a major celebration of Mexican American culture, first marked by Mexican communities in California in 1863. Cities hold parades, street festivals, mariachi concerts and folklorico dance performances, and families and friends gather for Mexican food. It is not a federal holiday.
