This day recognizes the efforts of thousands of volunteers around the world who volunteer their time on projects and initiatives aimed at improving social and economic conditions for vulnerable populations. Volunteers play a key role in programs ranging from fighting poverty and hunger to ensuring access to education, health care and equal opportunity. International Day of Volunteers for Economic and Social Development calls on us to recognize the importance of the contributions of volunteers and encourage further efforts to create a fairer and more prosperous world for all. Volunteering becomes a driver of positive change and long-term development of society.

Soil is a valuable natural resource on which agriculture and food production are based. This day reminds us of the need to take care of the soil, to preserve and restore it in order to ensure the future of generations. It also highlights the importance of soil in absorbing carbon dioxide and reducing the effects of greenhouse gases. International Soil Day calls us to action, to educate and communicate methods to improve soil quality and sustainability, and to promote sustainable agriculture and environmentally sustainable development. Together we can care for soil as our precious resource and strive for a healthier, more sustainable planet.

The historical significance of Hanukkah stems from the victory of Jewish rebels called the Maccabees over Syrian invaders and the restoration of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. This event is also associated with a miracle when a small amount of oil intended to consecrate the menorah (seven armies) burned for eight days instead of one, which made it possible to prepare new oil. Hanukkah is a time of joy, fellowship, and remembrance of important events in the history of the Jewish people. This holiday celebrates the spiritual heritage that is passed down from generation to generation and calls for light, hope and solidarity in dark times.
