International Day for Biosphere Reserves
The International Day for Biosphere Reserves is observed on November 3 to celebrate places where people protect nature while building sustainable livelihoods. UNESCO proclaimed the day in 2021, and it was first celebrated in 2022. Biosphere reserves are designated under UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme, launched in 1971, and the World Network of Biosphere Reserves now includes more than 700 sites in over 130 countries. Each reserve combines a strictly protected core area with surrounding zones where communities live, farm, fish, and work, making them living laboratories for balancing biodiversity conservation with economic and social needs. In the United States, well-known biosphere reserves include Yellowstone, the Everglades, and the Great Smoky Mountains. Parks, scientists, schools, and local communities mark the day with guided walks, research presentations, and educational events that show how people and nature can thrive together.
