Day Events
International Day of Epidemic Preparedness
The International Day of Epidemic Preparedness is observed on December 27 to stress the importance of preventing, preparing for, and responding to epidemics before they turn into global crises. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the day in December 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, and it was first observed that same month. The date coincides with the birthday of Louis Pasteur, the French scientist whose work on germs and vaccines laid the foundations of modern disease prevention. COVID-19, along with earlier outbreaks such as Ebola, Zika, SARS, and the 2009 H1N1 flu, showed how quickly a new disease can spread across borders and disrupt health systems, economies, and daily life. In the United States alone, COVID-19 claimed more than 1.1 million lives. The day promotes disease surveillance, early warning, research, vaccine development, and strong public health systems, along with international cooperation and information sharing. In May 2025, member states of the World Health Organization adopted a Pandemic Agreement to improve how the world prepares for and responds to future pandemics. Individuals can help too, by staying up to date on vaccinations, washing their hands, and staying home when sick.
