The historical significance of Hanukkah stems from the victory of Jewish rebels called the Maccabees over Syrian invaders and the restoration of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. This event is also associated with a miracle when a small amount of oil intended to consecrate the menorah (seven armies) burned for eight days instead of one, which made it possible to prepare new oil.
