International Universal Health Coverage Day is observed on December 12 to call for strong, equitable health systems that give everyone access to the care they need without financial hardship. The date marks December 12, 2012, when the United Nations General Assembly unanimously endorsed a resolution urging countries to move toward universal health coverage. Health advocates have marked UHC Day since 2014, and the UN officially proclaimed the international day in December 2017. According to the World Health Organization and the World Bank, about half of the world's population is still not fully covered by essential health services, and around 2 billion people face financial hardship because of health care costs. The United States is one of the few high-income countries without universal health coverage: insurance comes from employers, private plans, and public programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, and the Affordable Care Act marketplaces, and the Census Bureau reports that more than 25 million Americans were uninsured in recent years. Health organizations, advocates, and policymakers use the day to share stories, publish data, and push for affordable, quality care for all.
